Have you ever wanted to add some whimsy to your Saturday? Have you ever considered taking a bicycle ride? No, not one of those normal every day ride the bike down the road type rides, and not one of those breakneck mountain bike sessions - what about a ride with a little more whimsy, with a little more culture, a ride that shows you can be a little eccentric when you want to be.

I'm talking about a Tandem Bicycle. That's right, the bicycle 'built for two.'� My first exposure to a tandem bicycle was in the Muppets take Manhattan movie. Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog road through central park on a tandem bicycle - something that can sometimes be difficult for humans, but the puppets and their masters was quite a challenge. If you didn't see the movie, or aren't familiar with a tandem bicycle then you might not understand.

A tandem bicycle generally is your normal bicycle expanded to support two or more riders. They are not a new invention- tandem bicycles have been around for over 130 years. Although at first it looks overly complicated and that it would require an extreme amount of teamwork among the two riders with modern technology it can be quite easy to pedal the bike once you get your balance right. Some tandem bikes even have three wheels instead of two to make it a kind of tandem 'trike'� or tricycle.

Tandem bikes are designed for fun and speed. A good tandem bike can harness the power of both riders and produce some outstanding performance. Although the serious cyclist and companion can obtain performance and an experience they are not familiar with on the tandem bike it still provides a fun experience for the dabbler in bicycle oddities. You can still experience the ride that took Kermie and Piggy through Central Park in the Muppets take Manhattan.

You can rent a tandem bike for $20 an hour from the boat house in central park from 10am till dusk. You can take your time around the six-mile bike loop in the park with your significant other. However you obtain your tandem bicycle via a rental in Central Park, or a brand new bike from your closest bicycle dealer, you may also enjoy some more whimsy related to the world of Tandem Bikes.

When Harry Dacre composed the song 'Daisy Bel''� in 1892 he was well aware of the fun a bicycle built for two could offer. Take a risk, have some fun, and get on that Bicycle Built for Two.
