Tandem Bike Rentals - Some Important Advice
Tandem Bicycles Has the idea of riding a tandem bicycle ever crossed your mind? If you have a son who's into cycling it just might happen some day. Before you rush out to buy yourself a new tandem bicycle let me give you some advice. Try before you buy! Picture a virile, fit teenage son and a 60 year old short, pleasingly plump mother going to a bike rental facility. Sounds good so far doesn't it? There it was, in its pristine glory - a tandem bike anyone would want to ride! Ever safety minded, we rented a helmet for Mom since Son already had his Trek helmet with him. Sadly for us, it was not the owner operating the rental store that memorable Sunday afternoon. The novice employee did not suggest fitting the bicycle to each rider and Mom in her innocence didn't realize what a good idea it would have been. Son of course fit fine on the front seat and didn't realize till later, that Mom's frame and the bike's frame were not the same size. Just getting on the bike was a fortuitous task. Although Mom never had a bike of her own as a kid, she did learn how to keep her balance by pushing her brother's bike to the top of the farm lane and going as far as momentum carried her. Since her brother was fourteen years older and the bike had no chain, pedaling was just a formality with no real purpose. Friends sometimes let her take a spin when she came to play, but biking wasn't much of a rural activity. Fast forward to the bike trail. Numerous attempts to gain balance together, accompanied by hysterical laughter resulted in an astounding ride of about ten feet! This feat was duplicated many times until there was some semblance of continuous forward movement of the tandem bike. Things were going smoothly until the dreaded Stop Sign reared its ugly head. Nothing to do, but begin the whole process again after we portaged across to the meandering stream of bike trail. Suffice it to say there was no profanity, but much laughter as the hour flew by. "Only an hour?" you may say, but that was more than enough time to create an awareness of pain in muscles Mom was not even aware were in her body! Bike 25 Miles a Day Son had no ill effects, except sore stomach muscles from guffaws. Is riding a tandem bike a good idea? Certainly, as long as the rental facility fits it to both riders first. It's the experience of a lifetime!
